Fall Starts Before the Weather Changes

Every year, it happens. The calendar flips to August, stores begin filling with cashmere and boots, and suddenly everyone feels the urge to buy something for fall.

Always start with a plan.

A beautiful wardrobe isn't built in one afternoon at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale or with a weekend of impulse purchases. It's built through thoughtful decisions made before the season begins.

That's why I encourage my clients to spend a little time dreaming before they spend any money. Fall wardrobe planning should always begin with intention.

Executive wardrobe consultant Catherine Horgan sharing fall wardrobe planning tips to help women leaders build an intentional, timeless wardrobe.

Start with your calendar.

Fall has a rhythm all its own. Board meetings. Conferences. School events. Weekend dinners. Football Saturdays. Holiday travel beginning to peek around the corner.

Your wardrobe should support the life you're living, not the one a retailer is selling you.

Ask yourself:

  • Where will I spend most of my time this fall?

  • What moments matter most?

  • Where do I want to feel especially confident?

  • What version of myself am I stepping into this season?

The answers become your shopping strategy.

Then shop your closet.

Before adding anything new, revisit what you already own. Pull out jackets you forgot about. Try on boots before the first cold morning. See which sweaters still feel like you.

Notice what's missing. Often, the gaps are smaller than we imagine.

Buy fewer things, but better ones.

A thoughtful purchase has remarkable staying power. The right blazer becomes your default. The perfect loafer gets worn three times a week. A beautiful knit earns its cost every season.

These aren't exciting purchases because they're trendy. They're exciting because they make every morning easier.

Thoughtfully curated fall wardrobe essentials featuring timeless clothing and accessories for a versatile, professional capsule wardrobe.

Think in outfits, not items.

One great sweater is lovely. Five outfits built around that sweater change your life.

When my clients shop, we're asking,"What does this unlock?" Can it work for meetings? Travel? Dinner? Weekend errands? With denim? With trousers? With skirts?

Versatility is where confidence begins.

Fall is an invitation.

Not to reinvent yourself. To listen to your desires.

Every season gives us the opportunity to edit what no longer serves us and make room for what reflects where we're going.

That's the difference between having clothes…

…and having a wardrobe.
